CYCLADES - DELOS CRUISE

WALKING, SWIMMING & SAILING
Leto, seduced by Zeus, sought shelter on the isle of Delos, to flee from Hera’s wrath that discovered the truth about her pregnancy. Leto gave birth to the divine twins Apollo and Artemis on the island. Delos bears unique witness to the civilizations of the Aegean world since the 3rd millennium BC, inhabited by the Carians, Mycenaeans then Ionians. From the 7th century BC to the pillage of the island by Athenodoros, Delos was one of the principal Pan-Hellenic sanctuaries, hosting the feast of the Delians, which was celebrated every four years in May until 316 BC. Many historic monuments were built during this period. Motivated by religious reasons, purifications decrees were decided, leading many times to the exile of the Delians. This resulted in a quite good preservation of the archaeological remains, which are unearthed systematically since 1872 by the “Ecole française d’Athènes” in association with the greek government. Delos is Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1990.
